Common questions
What does FDA-certified mean for a mammography facility?
Under the Mammography Quality Standards Act, every U.S. facility that performs mammograms must hold an FDA certificate. That requires accreditation by an FDA-approved body, annual inspections, and federal standards for equipment, staff qualifications and reporting results. See what certification means.
How soon should I get my mammogram results?
Federal rules require the facility to send you a plain-language summary within 30 days, or within 7 days if the result is suspicious or highly suggestive of cancer. If you haven't heard within 30 days, call the facility. See your mammogram results.
Does Medicare pay for mammograms?
Medicare Part B covers a screening mammogram once every 12 months for women 40 and older, and you pay nothing if the provider accepts assignment. Diagnostic mammograms are covered when medically necessary, with the usual deductible and coinsurance. See Medicare.gov.
Which facilities offer 3D mammography?
FDA's certified-facility list doesn't say, so this site can't either. Many facilities now offer digital breast tomosynthesis; call and ask, and ask whether there is an extra charge.
What is the recall rate on some profiles?
For facilities we can match to a Medicare-certified hospital, we show that hospital's Medicare measure OP-39: the share of screening mammograms for Medicare outpatients followed by more imaging within 45 days, next to the national median. Some recalls are necessary, so it is not a quality score on its own.
Can facilities pay to be listed higher?
No. Facilities can buy a labelled featured spot for a flat monthly fee that is the same for every facility. It never changes the order of the list or anyone's certification status, and we never charge per patient, appointment, referral or exam.
